NPC Scale Demonstrates Global Reach and Strong Scientific Foundation in New International Review
A newly published international review demonstrates the growing importance of the Nurse Professional Competence (NPC) Scale as a trusted tool for assessing nursing competence in educational and clinical settings.
A newly published international review demonstrates the growing importance of the Nurse Professional Competence (NPC) Scale as a trusted tool for assessing nursing competence in educational and clinical settings. Originally developed in Sweden, the NPC Scale has been widely used in psychometric validation and cross-cultural adaptation studies and has been validated in several international contexts.

The review identified 61 studies using the NPC Scale and found that the instrument has been widely applied among nursing students, newly graduated nurses, and registered nurses. Researchers have used the scale to profile professional competence, evaluate educational approaches and clinical learning experiences, and examine associations between self-reported competence and contextual factors. The evidence base is particularly strong in nursing education and early competence development.
A key finding of the review is the NPC Scale's broad international applicability and extensive use in psychometric validation and cross-cultural adaptation studies. The shorter version of the scale (NPC-SF) has become particularly popular because it requires less time to complete while maintaining promising psychometric properties.
The review further highlights the relevance of the NPC Scale in addressing international priorities for nursing workforce development. As healthcare systems worldwide face increasing complexity and workforce challenges, nursing policy documents emphasize competence development, education, and leadership as key strategies for strengthening health systems. The NPC Scale provides a comprehensive framework for assessing these dimensions, including clinical care, value-based care, documentation and administration, care pedagogics, development, and leadership.
Overall, the review highlights the NPC Scale as an internationally applicable instrument for assessing nursing competence across educational and clinical contexts and for studying competence development in nursing education and practice.
